what is a conic - exploration activity for students to move the plane and create different conics
parabola vocab - several graphic organizers you can pick and choose from to go over the relationship/distances of focal length and focal width. I do use mirror points (endpoints of the focal width chord on the parabola).
4 north/south parabolas
4 east/west parabolas
the idea is that students use math to figure out where to place (h,k) and the "4p" on the equation.
2 more graphic organizers for how to algebraically and graphically find the focus, mirror points, vertex, directrix and focal axis. This has really helped my students.
2 more graphic organizers that organize the same information in a different format.
3 days of notes
day #1 - match the parabola to the equation
day #2 - write equations, sketch parabolas with centers at (0,0)
day #3 - write equations, sketch parabolas with centers at (h,k), prove equation given in general form is a parabola
graphs and pictures galore .... I love using graphs and pictures, so they are plastered in my notes
