This is a review activity to use at the end of the conic section unit after studying parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. It also works well as a formative assessment after conic sections have been studied.
The problems require student to write equations, in standard form, for hyperbolas, ellipses, and parabolas when given a variety of situations. Some problems require students to complete the square. Other problems provide clues about vertices, foci, directrix line, axes descriptions and/or asymptotes from which students must build the equations.
I have the students work with a partner. The students must correctly solve three problems in a row to win. Once they feel that they have solved three problems correctly, I grade their work. If they get the problem correct, they get the square. If they miss the problem, I get the square. We play for approximately 20-25 minutes. I offer a small prize to the first 5 winners.
My students enjoy the change of pace and the competition for prizes is intense.
