This PowerPoint focuses on combining sentences using coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. It contains 56 slides and it is highly interactive. The PowerPoint is fully animated.

It begins by focusing on coordinating conjunctions and teaching students the FANBOYS acronym. Students practice determining whether a sentence combined words, phrases, or clauses. Next, the comma rule is introduced (use a comma when combining clauses), and students are given several opportunities to practice using coordinating conjunctions to combine sentences.

In the second section of the PowerPoint, subordinating conjunctions are the focus. Students begin by learning the difference between a dependent clause and an independent clause, and then they practice identifying these clauses in sentences. The rule of when to use a comma is introduced (use a comma when the subordinate conjunction begins the sentence), and students are given several practice opportunities to write their own complex sentences.

This file also includes a 5-page PowerPoint companion handout. Students will remain especially engaged when they write on their own handout as you advance through the PowerPoint. When complete, they have a valuable tool for future reference! The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides.

Also, you DO have my permission to convert this PowerPoint to a Google Slides format to share with your students.
