In this activity, students will have to opportunity to work with factoring:
- Trinomials with a leading coefficient of 1
- Binomials of difference of two squares
There is a "Game Board" and 42 cards provided which need to be cut and prepared ahead of time. Two of these cards are labeled "Freebie Factor" where students will make their own factors. The remaining 40 cards consist of 40 polynomials that are factorables.
There are two methods to play this game and both are illustrated in details in the attached file.
Player 1 will draw a card from the deck of cards and factor the polynomial on the card. Player 1 will need to show his work on the attached "Show Work" form. After factoring the polynomial, player one will place a chip on one of the factors (in method 2, player one could place a chip on each of the factors). The game continues until one of the players "Connects Four" in a row, column, or diagonal.
This game reinforce the skills of factoring trinomials (with leading coefficient of 1) and difference of two squares. Hopefully students would have worked on many of these problems and gained speed in recognizing the process WHILE HAVING FUN :-)
It will be a great idea to laminate the game board, if possible.
More "Connect Four" games on the way.
