This 25-page lesson is based on the book Connected by Nicholas A. Christakis and James M. Fowler. The lesson starts by taking students through an activity introducing the idea that we can “map” or visualize groups of people and represent their relationships in an illustration--with three variations ready to print! Printable one page excerpts to read as a whole class then allow teacher to model close reading of a rigorous excerpt; students will practice strategies for annotating informational text and recognize/respond to the authors' claim: that it matters for us to recognize the ways that we are connected to and influenced by those around us. Five additional reading excerpts ("The Rules of Networks") are ready to print and use in small group/jigsaw reading. A printable student handout for notes and questions and clear teacher notes and instructions are provided throughout.
