Have some fun with compound nouns this holiday season!
PLEASE NOTE: This items is also featured in my Christmas Parts of Speech Bundle at a discounted rate!
Students will form fifteen compound nouns (with a holiday theme) by making matches. There are two different methods provided for student matching. I have included one sheet with all the word halves as well as cards that can be cut out and laminated for matching. The words on the cards are also mixed up so that you could have students cut apart their own cards if you wish.
After students make the matches, they write the compound nouns on a sheet provided and then use these nouns in writing.
In middle school, students can do the matching as a fun competition/race between groups, but it can also be done individually or in pairs as well. You could follow it up with a writing activity. You might also incorporate other aspects of the curriculum in the writing as well (such as vocabulary words, figurative language, etc.)
Depending upon your requirements and the way you use the activity, it could easily be adapted for a number of grade levels.
