This is a powerful lesson in which students both analyze and write poetry, making both their analysis and writing better and more powerful. There is a lesson snapshot of the unit with approximate times for each objective. The lessons themselves are fleshed out with suggested "Teacher talk." The introductory unit focuses on literary terms and how they are used. As the unit grows, students write their own poetry-concluding with a book of their own. They are also analyzing poetry in several different ways at the same time. The final summation is a synthesis essay which they include in their book of poetry. All of the worksheets and handouts are included, as well as poems and examples. This unit is written as a three week unit, but can easily stretched or made shorter.
