These cards can be used to introduce students to the eight themes that are a part of the Fifth Grade Social Studies. There are great activities that you will find on the GDOE website (5th grade social studies) that focus on the eight themes that thread through the fifth grade curriculum.
At the beginning of the year, I put the eight theme cards up on the wall. (If you laminate them, they will last longer!) They are on the last pages of this document.
As we go though each unit, and engage in the suggested GDOE activities, we discuss the theme, and then put the concept card up under the correct theme card.
As the year goes on, the students have a great visual in the classroom of how each theme threads through history! These activities help students with those higher level thinking skills! Their ability to synthesize information will increase with these theme-based activities.
If you try them, I would love to hear different ways you use them! I know all of you have great ideas to share!
