Introducing The Scarlet Letter to high school students through an authentic experience
This activity can be adapted to a brief introduction or extended to a full class period. Students experience the impact of negative branding by society and recognize that the elements of a classic are evident in the past as well as the present.
The activity focuses on the actual scarlet letter A Hester Prynne was made to wear on her chest as punishment for committing adultery. Students are asked to reflect on an embarrassing act they have committed and would never share with anyone. Then, they are asked to think about what it would be like to be branded for life because of that deed.
Discussions on social injustice, judgement, inequities, etc. can spin off of this activity.
