This assignment includes a page with reading information for the student about making text to self connections with the character and directions for the assignment, a written reading response example and grading rubric, and a writing page for students to write their reading response (3 usable pages).
As students are reading fiction they will infer the character's feelings and emotions and make a connection based on experience or empathy. Students will write two short paragraphs for this assignment: Paragraph one will show the character's feelings and gives an example of the situation. Paragraph two will show how the student connects to the character's feelings and situation and gives an example.
A WRITTEN READING RESPONSE EXAMPLE USING CHRYSANTHEMUM BY KEVIN HENKES IS INCLUDED.
This is a simple assignment, but it spells it out for students and gives them an example and rubric to help guide them through the work. You can use this assignment with the whole class (same fiction book or story) or with small groups or individuals (independent reading or book clubs).
