Reading comes alive when we recognize how the ideas in a text connect to our experiences and beliefs (text-to-self connections), events happening in the broader world (text-to-world connections), and our knowledge of other texts (text-to-text connections). Students who are able to make authentic connections while reading are better able to more deeply understand the text. Actively teaching and allowing students to continually practice this strategy helps students to make a habit of making these connections.
The Connections File provides an organizational system for students as they collect the connections they make during mini lessons and independent reading time. It also provides scaffolding to help students craft well-supported connections. The ability to craft well-supported connections is an essential piece in meeting the Common Core Reading Standard of referring to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
