Close reading requires students to be able to decode and make inferences about a text, including literal and suggestive meanings of words and phrases (also known as denotation and connotation). Gamify these ELA skills by using these connotation task cards that will reinforce connotative thinking and vocabulary skills, asking students to rank lists of words from most positive to most negative. Students must think critically while utilizing vocabulary, reading, analysis, and persuasive speaking skills.

An answer key is given for ease of use; however, some students may find that they disagree with the answers - this is actually a teachable opportunity to discuss the role age, gender, ethnicity, etc. play in influencing connotations.

Here’s what you’ll receive in this resource:

60 different word sets (32 Pages) so that students have plenty of opportunities to practice! Two versions are included so that you can differentiate for the needs of all learners. The basic version contains three words per card and care has been taken to eliminate the most challenging vocabulary, while the advanced version contains five words per card that are more challenging and nuanced, making them more difficult to rank.
Suggested answers for each word set (32 Pages) to make this a no-prep resource. Some students may find that they disagree with the answers - this is actually a teachable opportunity to discuss the role age, gender, ethnicity, etc. play in influencing connotations!
Teacher notes (1 Page) so that you have instructions and tips for using this assignment with students at your fingertips.
