This mini unit helps students explore the impact connotation has on communication. They will learn the difference between denotation and connotation, explore an essay and a poem and analyze their use of connotation, and produce a timed, in-class essay that asks them to comment on a pair of words that have similar meanings but very different connotations. Students will use varied methods to analyze and discuss texts, including SOAPSTone, journal entries, and annotation. This unit is applicable for any level of high school. I taught it in AP Language as part of a unit about words of hope and words of hate.
