A great alternative to a KWL chart and can be used in two different ways for Science Interactive Notebooks.
For 1 minute, students jot down what they know before the unit is taught about each topic in their own notebook: conservation, recycle, reuse, reduce. Pass to another person beside them. That person reads what person 1 wrote and writes for 1 minute, adding what they know about that one topic. Students pass it to two more people, allowing them 1 minute for each. After that topic is taught, same students go around and add information that they learned about each topic.
Students can respond in their notebook to information presented by the teacher on each topic, explaining/demonstrating their own understanding about information presented to them. Students can draw linguistic representation, write words or phrases, etc. Teacher can use as a quick assessment of understanding.
