Description

This bundle includes a lab worksheet and powerpoint presentation that teaches the law of conservation of mass. There are two parts to this lab. In the first part, students will pull apart a piece of steel wool and compare the mass before and after (physical change). In the second part the students will burn the steel wool and compare the mass before and after (chemical change). The burned steel wool will increase in mass (this will blow the student's minds!) as it forms iron oxide. Students will then need to figure out if this violates the law of conservation of mass. 10 post-lab questions are included with a key.

Materials needed: triple beam balance or electronic scale, steel wool, tongs, bunsen burner or candle (bunsen burner works best).
