This pack also includes 5 different interactive notebook activities for teaching your students to read and spell words with initial and final consonant blends. This resource aligns to the Common Core state standards and is also designed as a companion activity for structured and systematic reading intervention programs (see program alignment information below). How I Use this Resource:

  1. Introducing the Concept of "Consonant Blends" - I introduce the concept of "blends" as well as the definition (e.g. two or more separate sounds that are blended together) using the teacher poster and student posters.
  2. Introducing Beginning Blends and Ending Blends - I introduce each blend family using the colorful teacher poster, student posters, and the flapbooks. When using the flapbooks, my students generate words that have the sounds and we write them together under the flaps.
  3. Prescriptive Practice - I assign individual students specific interactive notebook activities to complete based on areas of need I've observed during our lessons.
  4. Literacy Center - After I've introduced both beginning blends and ending blends, I put out additional interactive notebook activities as a choice during literacy centers.
