I wanted to create a way to teach my students to read without lots of materials. I also wanted something simple enough for parents or paraprofessionals to be able to use, so I created consonant blends with short vowels.
Sounds are the building block of reading and we want letter-sound correspondence to be over learned and automatic. Each time students practice letter-sound correspondence they are strengthening that neural pathway in their brain. In consonant blends with short vowels every lesson begins with a sound drill.
In the first lesson one or several blends are introduced and practiced building from letters to words to sentences, then a practice page to reinforce the sounds and words.
The next lesson reviews the new blends and old sounds, practices words taught in the previous lesson. It also includes a short story read 3 times to build reading fluency and comprehension questions.
