This beginning reader/literacy learner product includes differentiated initial consonant practice as students cut, glue, and write to complete sentences that describe a “Consonant Kid”.
One of the first words children recognize is their name! As they develop social skills, children are highly motivated to learn how to read the names of their friends as well. Based on this interest in names, this product was designed to promote self-to-text connections with predictable repeated vocabulary as students practice matching initial consonant sounds within authentic text.
Students will be introduced to 16 “Consonant Kids” (all the consonants with the exception of Q, V, X, Y, and Z are included ) as they work through the various word work activities in this product. Two students are introduced for every three page segment. The beginning consonant of their names is bold and colored to be easily distinguished from other print on the page. Students cut and paste items that begin with the same consonant as the clip art students, and get immediate practice reading simple authentic text on the page. I think it is SO IMPORTANT to have students actively engage with authentic print once they have been introduced to an isolated skill (in this case sight vocabulary and initial consonant sounds) & I believe that is one feature that makes this product unique. The main section of the product features differentiated work providing two levels of support for students at different literacy levels. Please take a look at the simple, predictable text the students read as they choose which items belong to which Consonant Kid and a detailed description and examples of the activities on the Table of Contents page in the preview.
Enjoy and thank you for your interest in these materials!
