This fun phonics game provides lots of practice reading words with consonant le final stable syllables. Students pick a card and read it. They must say if the first syllable is open (long vowel) or closed (short vowel). If they correctly ID it, they get a snowball (pompoms or even crumbled paper balls) to toss. They try to toss the snowball into the correct tray (marked Open, Closed). If it goes in a point is earned for that round. If it doesn't, the round is scored zero!
My students struggled with knowing if the first vowel in a consonant le word was long or short. By the end of this game they were all dividing and reading the words like pros!
Larger groups can play in teams.
