Constitution Day: Discuss the meaning of the Preamble to the US Constitution
Perfect for Constitution Day, but you can also use it when the topic of the Constitution comes up in your SS class.
Did you know it is a national law that you as a teacher are supposed to recognize Constitution Day in your classroom? The act states,"that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day."
This activity is perfect to use when helping your students learn about Constitution Day.
This is a one page activity that has the preamble broken down into parts. Each part has a small section of writing lines for students to write the meaning of each part. They also write the definition of preamble.
This can be an individual activity, a partner activity, or one that you do whole group where students write in each part as you discuss it as a class.
After I do this activity, I usually break my students into partner groups. Because they now understand the meaning of each part, they work with a small group of 2-3 to illustrate that section of the preamble on large paper. I then hang the illustrations in a line down the hallway to form the entire preamble. Other students love reading it. I have included a picture of my hallway display so you can see what I do.
