Product Description
Constitution Day happens every year in mid-September. Help your students answer the question: “Why did we write the Constitution?” with this free resource!

Using the illustrations from the book We the Kids by David Catrow, elementary students of all ages will be able to translate the complicated words of the Preamble into everyday language that they can understand. As students glue the “kid-friendly” word flaps over the difficult words of the Preamble in the included activity, they will complete a version of the Preamble that simplifies the Constitution’s purpose.

Because Constitution Day happens near the beginning of a new school year, I link the United States Constitution {the “Set of Rules” for our country} with our classroom rules that we recently completed together. Students discover that we have a set of rules for our country for many of the SAME reasons that we have a set of rules for our classroom! This brings the Constitution into a light that all students can understand and appreciate.

In this freebie, I have included lesson suggestions for before, during, and after reading, a complete lift-the-flap activity, and teacher answer key!

Wishing you a Happy Constitution Day!
Bethany
