EXCERPT:
Juvenile Law covers those who are not adults. This law has steadily evolved since the 1960s to give juveniles constitutional law protections. This is a big step forward since, prior to then, juveniles were considered legally as the property of their parents. Juveniles obtained these rights because of United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) case decisions which steadily considered how many rights juveniles should be given versus how much protection. The more protection one is given, the more freedom is taken away.

As scientific findings kept apace with these legal developments, by the 21st century it was clear that juveniles were “wired differently” from adults and were not mini adults. Qualities like poor impulse control were debated in the courts over grave issues like juveniles and the death penalty. This led to abolishment of the death penalty for juveniles.

The purpose of this presentation is to cover major SCOTUS juvenile cases from the 1960s to present day. At the end of this presentation, juveniles should have a much clearer idea about their rights in present day America. They also will know which rights of theirs have limitations. Those rights with limitations do not fully bloom until they pass into their majorities.
