Integrate social studies in your ELA instruction! Students learn to construct strong responses to text while learning about American symbols.
Cite the evidence! Show the proof in your written response!
Children are often required to construct a written response to text including citing text evidence on standardized tests. Following this framework will allow students to write a strong response to any text-based question:
•Turn around the question, include your response
•Restate your response
In this activity pack, kiddos are reading informational text about AMERICAN SYMBOLS:
The Pledge of Allegiance
Statue of Liberty
The American Flag
& are then asked to respond to a question citing evidence. Designed to help kiddos begin to learn that formula, there are 3 levels of support:
♦Level 1 Sticky notes on the side are intended to help kiddos begin to learn how to break down a question and then look for the evidence that’s needed to support an answer.
AND Sentence stems lets kiddos practice using a framework that will allow them to be successful with read & respond activities later, when they don’t have the supports (like on standardized testing!)
♦Level 2 Sticky notes like Level 1 support, but no sentence stems.
♦Level 3 Does not have sticky notes with leading questions. Students must locate the needed evidence on their own. This level includes prompts for each section (restate the question, add 2 examples of evidence, concluding sentence). A spinner is included with examples of sentence stem for the evidence.
