Product Description
Constructing Responses Mini-Unit is a set of 4 lessons, plus support materials, designed to help you teach your students how to construct meaningful responses to literary text questions.

This mini-unit was designed to teach my own 4th grade students how to construct responses and cite evidence from texts to support their ideas using 5 steps: Restate, Answer, Cite Evidence, Explain, and Reread. The unit follows a gradual release of responsibility model starting with teacher-led lessons, partner practice, and finally independent practice.

Three different types of literary texts are included for students to practice their constructing response skills:
• Mary’s Lamb (a poem)
• The Tale of Peter Rabbit (a fable)
• How the Turkey Buzzard got his Suit (a Native American Myth)
Each reading selection comes with a set of open-ended questions.

Support materials are also included:
• Detailed lesson plans for each of the 4 lessons. Lesson 4 includes 3 possible options depending on what your students needs are at that time in the unit.
• INB/ journal pages: R.A.C.E.R. flap-book and Evidence Based Sentence Starters.
• CCSS “I Can…” standards poster for 4th grade ELA standards
• Seven (7) open-ended questions to be used with any text students are reading in class. These can be used for more practice or as CCSS check-in assessments. Each of the seven relate to Key Ideas and Details CCSS.
