Product Description
Colonies in the Americas were developed along strict principles and guidelines per charters or mandates issue by the governing nation in Europe. In this exercise, divide students into groups and provide each group with a large sheet of paper (roughly 4x6 feet). Note: you can also use a tiled floor, which works well for measurement and review; make sure you use dry erase or washable markers on the floor! Provide students with the Spanish Royal Ordinance for New Towns and have the groups build a new colony. Afterwards, expect them each as a class via small presentations, examining each for how well it followed the ordinance and what some of its flaws and strengths are. Works well as introduction to the Examination of Colonies Exercise.
