This lesson is designed for students who already have a preliminary understanding of how to find the 5-number summary of a data set and who are familiar with constructing box-and-whisker plots. Alternatively, it can be used as an introduction to box-and-whisker plots if the teacher guides the students through each part of the assignment.
In this lesson, students will be given 5 data sets (5 classes' math test scores) and they will find the 5-number summary for each of the five data sets. Next, students will construct a box-and-whisker plot for each set of data using the given number line worksheet (same number line for all 5 box-and-whisker plots). Students will observe their box-and-whisker plots and answer teacher-generated questions (suggestions provided). Lastly students will analyze their box-and-whisker plots once more and then come up with two of their own questions.
