In this inquiry activity, students are challenged to try basic constructions using a compass and a straightedge. Then, they work together to discover the best strategy.
No prior knowledge of constructions is required for this introductory lesson. A lesson guide is provided.
First, the whole class practices using a compass.
Then, students independently try four different constructions as instructed on a card:
Copying a line segment
Finding a midpoint
Drawing a perpendicular bisector
Copying an angle
Next, students work in groups comparing their construction strategies.
Finally, instructions are provided to correctly complete each construction.
Building toward Common Core Standard:
HSG.CO.D.12Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.
