Introduce students to basic constructions with this set of lessons, including guided practice, challenge activities, and task cards.
4 construction skills included: copying a line segment, locating a midpoint, drawing a perpendicular bisector, and copying an angle.
•Part 1: Becoming familiar with a compass
Students learn the basics and practice drawing with a compass.
•Part 2: Copying a line segment
Students are guided through the steps to copy a line segment and then challenged to find line segments of certain lengths.
•Part 3: Locating a midpoint
Students are guided through the steps to find a midpoint and a perpendicular bisector. They complete a challenge of connecting midpoints of polygons’ sides.
•Part 4: Copying an angle
Students are guided through the steps to copy an angle and then challenged to create a star shape by copying angles.
8 different task cards are provided to give students extra practice with construction skills. These could also be used as an assessment. Hint cards are provided as well for students who need extra help.
The guided practice is great to do as a whole class. Then each challenge can be assigned for partners to work together or for each student to complete individually. The task cards included at the end can be used for additional practice, early finishers, or an assessment.
