These documents are geared for teaching consumers, producers and decomposers. The lesson can be used with any text covering the material, including textbooks. It was written as part of the compare and contrast standards in the Common Core. First, students use the Top Hat organizer to compare and contrast the three types of living things. This graphic organizer helps students clearly see differences, more so than a Venn Diagram. Next, students discuss 4 important questions to help them break down their graphic organizer and sythesize information. Once they have recorded their thoughts, teacher will lead a discuss to help them understand the importance of each type of living thing in an ecosystem. Finally, students will complete a summary frame comparing and contrasting their learning. There are 3 types of summary frames for 3 different levels in your class. I have used this for an observation and received 'Exemplary' for differentiation!
