Connect your government students to the legislative process in a way they will never forget. This project challenges students to research active legislation using government websites such as the Library of Congress and Open Congress, select a topic of personal interest that directly affects their lives and propose a course of legislative action to address the issue through a letter to the corresponding Congressional committee. The project combines what students have learned about how a bill becomes a law, party politics, interest groups, Congressional committee structures and persuasive writing into one comprehensive and meaningful assignment. Materials include a complete student friendly project description, step by step legislation research handouts, peer editing sheet for rough draft and final copy grading rubric. Everything in the project is editable so that you can customize the project to suit your own needs. Writing is based upon rigorous Common Core argumentative writing standards complete with claim, reasoning and evidence. Please provide feedback if you choose to use this product.
