Description

Are you looking for a modification of STEM in large groups? STEM for One student is here! The current scenario for school attendance is ushering in changes to our STEM labs, Maker Spaces, and STEM in the classroom. Let me help you make this transition into independent STEM projects.

This challenge includes designing containers!

NOTE: This challenge is available in a money-saving bundle:

This STEM resource is a modified version of one of my popular STEM challenges. It is designed to be completed by one student. This is not ideal. STEM Challenges thrive on teamwork and this is the part of working with young engineers we love so much. Watching students solve problems and collaborate together is priceless.

This modified STEM Challenge has student task cards to complete each step of the Engineering Design Process. Each student will build his or her own structure. I know you have questions!

QUESTIONS:

  • How will this work? Each student will receive the task cards. In a classroom setting with social-distancing, students can share via projector with the teacher leading discussions about the challenge. Each student builds an individual model.
  • What about the materials? Sharing materials or working closely with teammates may not work with your social-distancing rules. Each student will have his or her own set of task cards and materials. These materials are consumable and can be given to students in a bin, zippered bag, or envelope.
  • So, no teamwork? Students won't be able to work closely together, but this doesn't mean they cannot be part of a team. The resource will give you some ideas on how to do this!
  • What if my students are at home? The materials and task card packets can be sent home. The resource includes a digital version of the task cards in case you want to deliver the content in that manner. Just send home the bag of materials and students will use the digital format from Google Classroom and fill in text boxes on the digital task cards.
  • WHAT MATERIALS ARE NEEDED? Cardstock or construction paper, pipe cleaners, straws, and tape. I chose this challenge because the materials are easy to gather and consumable.
  • WHAT GRADE LEVEL IS THIS FOR? This challenge has been tested with grades 3-5. The resource includes suggested modifications for grades 1-2.

File 1 - Teacher's Guide Printable

File 2 - Printable Student Task Cards

File 3 - Digital Student Task Cards

Let's break this down!

TEACHER'S GUIDE

  • 8-pages of detailed instructions, tips, and ideas for using the challenges in a modified classroom setting or with students at home- including preparing the challenge
  • photo page of completed projects
  • detailed instructions for adding to your Google Classroom

PRINTABLE: This is the task card set for students to use.

  • 3-page set following the Engineering Design Process with areas to add comments and sketches.

DIGITAL FILES: This is the task card set for students to use. To use this set you will add the file to your Google Drive. The teacher's guide has detailed directions if you are new to using this tool.

  • The digital set is the same task cards seen in the printable sets. I added background colors to the Google slides since you will not be printing them.

Let's face it! Tackling school with social-distancing is going to be challenging. Adapting STEM Challenges to have students complete them independently is doable, but will take some work. I have done that for you!
