This lesson introduces the surrealist imagery of Maggie Taylor, Jerry Uelsmann, and Robert and Shana Parkeharrison. Students use a family story as inspiration for a surreal photomontage using Photoshop, adding paintbrush and texture layers for a painterly look.
This lesson is appropriate for high school students who have some experience with Photoshop but is too challenging as an intro to Photoshop. I include it in my Computer Graphics 2 and Photography 2 classes and I have always found it to be a very successful lesson. Not only are the images compelling, but the students' family stories are often very moving.
This packet contains introductory activity as well as student instructions and a demo with screenshots. I have left it as a Word document so you can copy and paste the student instructions into a handout.
