Suzanne Stryk creates place-based assemblages, mixed media collages in relief. Her innovative use of collage as well as her connection to scientific observation interpreted through art is the inspiration for this lesson for advanced art students. It touches on scientific illustration, nature writing, observation and research, as well as working with mixed media in relief. I include suggested references, materials, introductory activities, student-ready instructions and closing activities. I've also added a list of other artists who are inspired by science. I have kept the file as a word document so that you can edit it to suit your needs, or cut and paste the student-ready instructions into a handout. I do not include a slide presentation because of copyright issues, but I do give a detailed description of how I created mine. This would be a good opportunity to collaborate with a science teacher.
