    Description

This bundle includes context clues task cards, a set of 15 practice sheets, and a slide presentation - lots of resources for whole class instruction, individual practice, and for practicing this close reading skill with activities or games.

The 30 task cards include these activities:

    Choose the best definition

Choose among multiple meanings of words

    Choose and write synonyms

    Define words

    Make good word choices

    Write sentences

    Solve riddles

    Draw detailed illustrations

This set of 30 half-page cards features original passages on an outdoors/camping theme, plenty of content for middle grade kids, two to four questions per card, attractive clip art appropriate for middle grade students, and white backgrounds for easy printing.

The practice sheet set includes 15 activity sheets for students to work with context clues in their reading and writing. With these worksheets, students utilize close reading skills as they get individual text based practice using the context of a word to:

    Choose the Correct Word

    Choose the Correct Definition

Choose Among Multiple Meanings of Words

    Use Context Clues in Writing

Identify and Use Three Types of Context Clues:

    Explanations

    Examples

    Contrast

The reading passages on these activity sheets vary from a single sentence to a full paragraph to give students more in-depth practice, and there are different question types including matching, fill-in-the-blanks, completing the sentences, choosing answers from a word bank, write-and-draw, and multiple choice.

The PowerPoint slide presentation introduces and provides practice with using context clues. Examples and student questions focus on close reading to choose the correct word, to define words, and to choose among multiple meanings of words. Three specific types of context clues are also addressed - explanation clues, example clues, and contrast clues. Two sets of ten student questions are incorporated into the slides to provide practice as students learn. The last two slides also provide a note sheet for students to complete as well as a completed version of the note sheets

This Context Clues Package supports the Reading and Language standards that ask students to use the context of a word in a story to determine its meaning.

With the variety of task cards and activity sheets, this set also provides some easy ways to differentiate context clues instruction.

You can also see lots more activities for teaching reading skills here.
