Context clues can be such a hard skill for students because there is not one “fits all situations” strategy or formula. It really all depends on the word they are being asked about and the clues given in the text. I learned over the years that context clues practice with actual words serves my students much better than practicing with nonsense words. I also wanted my students to be able to read texts about topics that interest them. For all of these reasons, I created this product and it is honestly one of my favorites. My own students have a much better understanding and accuracy level with finding the meaning of a word in context.
Set up of this center is super simple! Just print the passages and cut off the strip of definitions into the 4 cards. The rest of the cards can remain one piece. Students will match the definitions to the words as they read. Each passage has four underlined words in context for students to identify.
*Tip: Print on black and white for crystal clear color images or print on colored paper for easily keeping matching pieces together.
