This context clues lesson moves beyond the basics. I designed it specifically to increase academic rigor and align with CCSS Language Standards L.4.a—to introduce and provide students with practice and assessment using the following types of context clues: Logic, Description, Grammar, Compare, Contrast, Cause/Effect Relationships.
Common Core Language Standards L.4.: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 5 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
a. Use context (e.g., cause/effect relationships and comparisons in text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
The two part lesson includes an interactive power point and everything you need to introduce the six types of context clues mentioned above, facilitate practice, and assess the skill. Created to align with key principals of Common Core, the lesson takes a student centered approach with the teacher acting mainly as facilitator.
♥ Start to Finish 6 page TWO PART Lesson Plan with Step-by-Step guidelines for INTO, THROUGH, BEYOND
♥ TWO PART interactive power point. Part I - 17 slides.
After stating our objective the show presents students with an engaging example to hook them from the start! I have my students respond with whiteboards—use any method of your choice!
The power point moves students through the lesson making your job easy—advance to the next slide or pause at various points to facilitate student responses, and enjoy as your students interact with two or more examples of each of the clues introduced in Part I: Logic, Description, and Grammar. The examples build from 1 - 3 sentences to short 5 sentence paragraphs with sound effects and funny animation throughout.
♥ TWO PART interactive power point. Part II – 16 slides.
After our objective is restated students are presented with the task of collaborating to create their own examples using the three clues introduced in Part I. Following this important connection, the next three clues are introduced: Compare, Contrast, and Cause/Effect Relationships. Again, students are presented with two examples of each clue, and tasked with determining the meaning of unknown words using these clues. Interactive practice progresses in difficulty with each successive example.
♥ Printable Pages: 4 student handouts/posters correspond with slides in the power points. (The printed lesson plan gives specific guidelines for when to distribute these during the show.) Following the power points there are 5 pages of four different printable paper pencil practice and two assessments that are 2 pages each. (See Part I and Part II Contents listed below.) The practice and assessments were carefully created to include content specific vocabulary from 5th grade science standards with informational passages that build in length from 1 - 3 paragraphs. Topics include Earthquakes, Hurricanes, The Solar System, Earth’s Water, and Human Body Systems.
♥ 9 pages of detailed Answer Keys – In addition to the meanings of the unknown words, these list the type of clues used, signal words, and how they help to determine the unknown meanings.
♥ 2 Assessments – The first assessment is formative and requires students to use the first three clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a 3 paragraph informational text. The second assessment is summative and requires students to use all six clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a 3 paragraph informational text.
