10 Daily Warm-ups to help students grasp how to use context clues to determine the meaning of an unknown word.
Directions for use:
Project the page and only reveal 1 sentence at a time. Have students raise their hands and share the context clue words that are helping them to determine the meaning of the underlined word. The teacher will highlight the context clue words.
After students determine the context clues, ask them what the underlined word could mean. Record the possible word meanings in the space above the sentence.
Then, reveal the next sentence. Repeat the process of highlighting context clues and have students determine the meaning of the underlined word. As students receive more context clues, they should eliminate possible word meanings that they came up with prior.
Repeat the process until all the sentences have been revealed.
At the bottom of each page the teacher will find possible answer choices.
The first two pages have nonsense words. The last 8 pages have real words along with some facts about the word as necessary.
