Although it is one of the most critical tools in reading for understanding, the concept of context clues is not easily grasped and applied by early elementary students. It is an important component of ELA Common Core Standards in the primary grades. The following lesson and student practice represent an approach that engages students in an enjoyable dialogue with the teacher, tying context clues to actual life experiences and prior knowledge. Students can easily grasp and begin to use this reading strategy. The teacher can refer back to this lesson repeatedly during the year as students apply this skill in reading both for pleasure and information. Included are: 1) Stated objective and check-for-understanding, 2) Complete easy-to-follow-lesson plan with dialogue between teacher and students, 3) a unique and enjoyable student practice allowing for creative thinking, 4) Teacher Key for the student practice.
