Context clues can help students find success in reading, expanding vocabulary, and more. This set of task cards will teach your students to recognize prefixes as context clues and use them to determine word meaning.
Prefixes as Context Clues
This resource allows students to practice using four common prefixes as context clues: dis-, mis-, re-, and un-. Each task card has a word used in context with four answer choices. Instructional cards for each prefix are also included, as well as answer keys.
Use to Fit Your Needs
These task cards can be used in a variety of ways to suit your teaching style and your students' needs. They would work well for direct teaching with a document camera, for independent classwork, partner work, or the whole class activity SCOOT. Copies can be made for each student, or a class set can be printed, cut, laminated, and stored in an envelope or bag for a literacy center activity. If you prefer digital forms and worksheets, they are available here: Prefix Context Clues Worksheets: Grades 5-8. Please note that the content in the task cards and the forms/worksheets are the same.
I hope your students enjoy using this resource to learn about prefix context clues! If you are looking for similar resources for direct, synonym, antonym, and inference context clues, check out Context Clues Task Cards: Grades 5-8 and Context Clues Worksheets: Grades 5-8.
