Description

These four print-and-go tri-folds target the skill of using context clues to identify the meaning of an unknown word. You can use these context clues tri-folds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who could benefit from targeted context clues instruction and who needed additional opportunities to practice identifying the meanings of unknown words. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

The context clues trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Tri-fold #1: The main purpose of Book #1 is to introduce students to three common types of context clues: definition clues, synonym clues, and antonym clues. Students use context clues to define the italicized word in 19 sentences.

Tri-fold #2:The main purpose of Book #2 is to introduce students to two more types of context clues: inference clues and example clues. On the back two panels, students are given the opportunity to use all 5 of the context clue types! In this tri-fold, students use context clues to define the italicized word in 22 sentences.

Tri-fold #3: The primary purpose for this tri-fold is to show students how context clues can often be used to identify the correct meaning of a multiple meaning word or a heteronym. The first three panels focus on multiple meaning words like "long", "smart", "band" and "spoke". Students must use context clues to determine how these words are used in the given sentences. The back two panels focus on heteronyms like "project", "wind", and "minute". Again, students learn to use context clues to determine the meaning of the heteronym in the sentence. In this tri-fold, students use context clues to define the italicized word in 20 sentences.

Tri-fold #4: The main objective for this final context clues tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to using context clues. Students will likely see questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 2 fiction reading passages and 1 nonfiction reading passage. Thirteen multiple choice questions are included in this tri-fold. All of the questions require the use of context clues to define words that are used within the passage.

Finally, here is a partial list of the words that students will define using the context clues provided: bridle, bliss, interjecting, vexed, secede, elude, curt, purge, unkempt, interest, dejected, garbled, omnivores, swelled, crest, pare, entreat, diverged, pastel, grave, drab, profound, glower, polygon, nudge, stealthy, trivial, brawl, rash, perish, and captivity.
