The first time I teach context clue strategies in the school year, I set up a note page in our reader’s notebook. We take notes on the five main ways to help decipher the meaning of an unknown word. I teach kids to look for clues around the unknown words-these clues often fit into one of five main categories (synonyms, antonyms, definition, example, or infer). Did the author provide synonyms or antonyms to help the reader determine word meaning? Or did the author flat out give a definition to the word (often times, you will see this in information texts)? Other times authors will give the reader an example that gives insight into what the unknown word might mean. Or the reader may have to infer what the unknown word means based on clues throughout the paragraph/passage. Often times authors embed these clues to help readers figure out meanings of not so familiar words.
These 24 cards can be sorted under the five main headers. Students can pair up to read the cards, have discussions, sort the cards, and record their answers (recording sheet/answer key included). I basically force my students to also discuss what the meaning of the underlined word actually means and how they know. These cards can also be used as a whole class discussion starter, in guided reading groups, or for literacy rotations.
