Figuring out the meaning of unknown or multiple-meaning words can be challenging for students as they try to read more complex texts. It is a critical skill for life, for academics, and for reading in general. There are several types of context clues. Some of those are: examples, synonyms, antonyms, descriptions, and word parts. These task cards can be a powerful resource for modelling, practice, and reinforcing students’ abilities to use context to determine word meanings.
More than simply asking students to determine word meanings, these cards also ask students to support their thinking with evidence from the text. The tasks herein require students to engage in a layer of making inferences regarding word meaning.
