3 Types of Context Clue Questions from Released STAAR:
--What clues best help the reader understand the meaning of [word]?
--Which words or phrases from the text best describe [word]?
--What is a synonym of [word]?
Using context clues in poetry is tough. Figuring out the meaning of unknown words can be challenging for students as they try to read more complex texts. It is a critical skill for life, for academics, and for reading in general.
There are several types of context clues in the poetry task cards. Some of those are examples, synonyms, antonyms, descriptions, and word parts. These task cards can be a powerful resource for modeling, practice, and reinforcing students’ abilities to use context to determine word meanings.
More than simply asking students to determine word meanings, these cards also ask students to support their thinking with evidence from the text. Students will use context clues in 12 original poems.
