Context Clues Story Booklets give students worksheet practice using Good Guessing / Context Clues Strategies. Each packet tells a short story arranged in worksheet/booklet form. This allows developing readers to practice using the context clues strategies in the context of a story.
Teachers can use Context Clues Story Booklets in these ways:
Project the file to use with the whole class to model and discuss Context Clues Thinking and Good Guessing Strategies.
Give Booklets to students for seatwork practice or early finishers work or literacy center activity.
Use in small guided-reading groups for additional differentiated guided practice.
Send home as homework packet,
or for additional support for parents working with struggling readers.
Context Clues Story Booklets are most suitable for 3rd-4th grade, though I use these story booklets with my 2nd graders as I support them in their growth towards rigorous reading skills. I also begin context clues work with my 5th graders using stories such as these.
Print - in color or grayscale - multiple copies or print/laminate one or several Literacy Center copies to use with dry erase markers or place in sleeve protectors.
Booklet consists of 25 sentence boxes.—4 sentence boxes per page. (7 pages total; 14 including answer keys)
Each sentence contains one underlined word and three multiple choice meanings.
Students circle, highlight or underline the correct meaning of each underlined word.
Each work page is followed by its own answer key page—allowing students or parents to self-correct for immediate feedback..
In addition to the answers, answer-key pages include helpful hints for each sentence to model thinking about context clues.
Space is provided for student scores, with a handy percentage reference chart included.
One informational page teaching students about Good Guessing offers support for students, teachers and parents.
