Using context clues is an important skill for students to learn. It can help them understand and learn new vocabulary, as well as, aid in comprehension of information. Unfortunately, this skill can be difficult for students to learn on their own.
This packet provides teaches students how to find the information needed to determine word meanings by using a color-coding technique. Using color-coding instead of simply underlining with pencils make the information easier to find and helps the instructor to see what the student is finding as 'helpful' information.
There are 20 WORKSHEETS included in this packet! Each worksheet has an original story and three vocabulary words that students must use context clues to determine their meaning. That is a total of 60 WORDS! There are three choices for each word’s meaning in the first 10 worksheets and space for the students to write the meaning in the remaining 10. This offers a progression of difficulty and growth of the skill. These vocabulary words are appropriate for grades 3-6. Words for this activity were chosen using Common Core standards, research from Robert Marzano, and other vocabulary resources.
