Idioms can be challenging for students to understand. Many times they take idioms literally. With this resource, students will practice using context clues to help them determine the meaning of idioms.
Each piece of text is written with purposeful clues to help students determine the correct meaning of the underlined idiom. Students are then required to write a sentence or two explaining how they came up with that definition (i.e., What clues did they use from the text?). As a wrap up, students will draw a picture of both the literal and figurative meanings of the idiom. The pictures they draw will crack you up!
I've used these activities in whole group, guided reading, word work, and independent settings. They are also a great way to teach and practice test taking strategies for standardized testing. These activities are also perfect for helping English Language Learners learn about figurative language and idioms.
There are 17 pages with two questions on each page = 34 idioms to define. Answer key included.
