Continents and Oceans Unit
This is such a fun and exciting unit. Students not only learn where the continents and oceans are located, they learn lots of facts and information about each continent. There are fun research and craft activities.
Included in this unit are 7 pen pal letters from 7 children who live in the continents around the world. There are also 4 personal pictures of landmarks in their continent. When I use this unit, I introduce one continent at a time. I put a pen pal letter with pictures and a printable continent field guide for each student in an envelope addressed to my class. I read the letter, show the pictures and staple the letter to the world map I have hanging in my class.
I have the students use the field guide and other sources to research the continent in Daily 5, Language Arts, or during social studies. They complete the research sheet and maps.
As we study the continents and oceans it is important for the students to know the locations. Depending on my class make up, I have tackled making a paper maché globe. Other years I have used a Chinet paper plate to make an oval map. I have also used a blue piece of paper to show locations of continents, oceans, equator, and prime meridian.
