Contractions – some of the most common errors in English usuage!
Simply put a contraction is the shortened version of the written or spoken form of a word. It is formed by omitting an internal letter, usually a vowel as in cannot/can’t. The omitted letter is then replaced by an apostrophe in writing as in is not/isn’t. Occasionally, there are other changes involving a word change as in will not/won’t. Contractions are used in speaking and informal writing, but should not be used for writing formally. Students need a solid foundation in how contractions are formed and their meanings.
Of course, all word study is based on the continuing assessment of students’ individual needs.
