This set of lessons is designed to give a structure for introducing and talking about students’ internal states. This lesson is designed to use with Conscious Discipline but is explained so that it can be used by anyone seeking to teach students to monitor their own internal levels an to be in control of these states. (Self-Regulation)

This set of lessons is also how I set up the noise control system in my classroom. Our S.T.A.R. person (a classroom job) helps to monitor the class’s energy level. When the S.T.A.R. person feels the class is getting too loud, too active, or too anxious, he or she shakes the clacker and leads us in a S.T.A.R. breath. It is incredible how a student taking this leadership role changes how the class reacts to this reminder. The kids begin to take ownership for the focus and energy in our room. They learn to take a breath to help calm their friends who need help. Best of all, my stress level is lower because I have allowed my students to take charge of this area. We are all breathing and working together!

This lesson uses the prop of a “clacker.” This is the hand clapping toy shown on the cover. I purchased mine at the Dollar Tree for $1. You can also purchase them on Amazon using the search term “hand clapper.”

--> Plans for how I introduce and explain the clacker to my students. These are written to be suitable for any age level. These plans include an interactive anchor chart.
--> Student "clackometers" for students to use in monitoring their clackers.
--> A foldable students create with ideas for how to monitor their clacker when it is too fast or two slow.
--> Plans for how I introduce the S.T.A.R. person job to help monitor the class' energy level.
--> A "Calm & Focus" chart my class uses to graph our level of control each day and week.
--> Glittery stars that can be used to create a star pointer for the S.T.A.R. person class job.
