About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory does not address a specific Next Generation Science Standard, but it complements concepts related to other NGSS. This lab combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Convection Currents Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Observe a convection current in a fluid.
2. Illustrate the motion of warm and cold fluid in a convection current.
3. Explain how convection is important to the motion of air and ocean water on Earth.
4. Apply knowledge of convection currents to design a heating and cooling system.

Science Skills Station
Students will create a convection current at this station. They will use their observations to describe how hot and cold material in a fluid moves so to create the convection current.

Narrative Station
Students will read a text about convection currents. Then students will watch a video about wind. Students will apply what they know about convection currents to explain how and why wind occurs.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating convection currents. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will design and build a prototype of a heating and cooling system in a large room. Students will position supply and return vents so to circulate air in the room in such a way that the climate is comfortable in the room.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Suggestions for projects that are best suited for this particular lab are included. It is up to the teacher to control this portion of the lab, and thus, the higher-order skills utilized in this activity. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Additional Materials Required:
1 Computer or tablet
3 Sets of colored pencils
Plastic shoebox-sized container
5 Styrofoam cups (all the same size)
Red food coloring
Blue food coloring
Room temperature water
Hot water
2 droppers (3 mL of similar size)
4 flat drink coasters
2 250 mL glass beakers (or similar containers)
Shoebox (or similar box) (1 per group)
